Back in the 1950s South Africa was the New World on merchants’ lists. The likes of New Zealand and Australia were mere twinkles in the winemakers eye!
The South African wine industry, however, although established, was stagnating: production was based around subsidies and guaranteed prices so there was no incentive to go for quality. However, with political change both in the country and the industry itself, the mindset has changed. The quantity-producing majority has been replaced by the quality-conscious minority, resulting in diverse wines and booming exports. Look to the wines of Bon Cap Estate, Lammershoek and Klein Steenberg to have this confirmed.
