To celebrate 185 years of the house, here is the first vintage Rose made by Joseph Perrier.

Made up from a blend of 3 varietal, 20% chardonnay, 5% pinot meunier and 75% pinot noir, which includes 12% of Cumieres rouge, this rosé comes from 4 different premiers and grand cru villages (Mailly, Rilly, Chouilly and Mesnil sur Oger). This is the first ever vintage Rose produced by the House of Joseph Perrier and it comes from a large vintage with a good balance of sugar and acidity. Chief winemaker Claude Dervin fermented each parcel separately in small temperature controlled fermenters, for both the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations. The blending trials were extensive and involved a minimum of 10 different tastings before the final blend was agreed upon. After 7 years on the lees in the cellars, it is being disgorged in small lots to ensure that it arrives with the consumer with lively fruit and as fruity as possible.

By any measure this is truly a serious wine. On the nose there are ripe fruit notes and a suggestion of depth and serious quality. On the palate there is great concentration of flavour of the red fruits, particularly red currants and strawberries, over a fine structure and elegant finish. Long and complex in the mouth, this is definitely a food wine. Truly a champagne for savouring and enjoying as much as any great table wine.

With elegance and breeding this is a rich sensual champagne. The presentation in satin rose encourages you to pick up the bottle, the flavours of small red fruits and the velvet texture demand a great occasion. Ideal as an aperitif for the slighty more serious occasion, this Rose will also accompany simple dishes such as Parma ham with mozarella, carpaccio of beef with shavings of duck liver, or red tuna with peppers, and is particularly interesting with the flavours of the Orient, including lebanese, indian, and vietnamese cuisine, pointing up the richness and contrast of their natural flavours.

"2002 Joseph Perrier, Brut Rosé, Champagne, FranceI have a Bank Holiday treat for you all this week, and in the spirit of fair play, I have made sure that I have included as many stockists as I can possibly find, in the hope that you will all be able to find a bottle or two no matter where you live in the UK.  Joseph Perrier’s new vintage rosé is a dreamboat.  The ancient, skittle-shaped bottle catches the eye as much as the intensity of its pink hue in the glass and, rather amazingly, it is the first vintage rosé made at this house since its inception 185 years ago.  2002 is a stunning vintage - cool, calm and with fabulous mouth-watering acidity.  It will live for a decade with ease, but I could not help myself the other day and I polished off a bottle with some grilled tiger-prawns in a trice!  These days, a lot of the bigger fizz brands charge nearer to the hundred quid mark for this sort of wine - well done for Joseph Perrier for keeping this wine within reach of us mere mortals."
