Our Chateau Musar Wines

The remarkable Lebanese wines of Chateau Musar are produced from a region with a deep/powerful vine-growing history. The fertile Western Bekaa Valley, stretching between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountains, has grown vines for over 6,000 years, initially by the sea-faring Phenicians, the fore-runners of the modern Lebanese – and who, incidentally, introduced viticulture to Italy, Greece and Egypt. It’s no surprise to learn that, today, Chateau Musar’s grapes are still all hand-harvested by Bedouin tribes-people.

It was this fertile strip of land that Gaston Hochar, founder of Chateau Musar, chose to set up his vineyards in 1930. Aged just 20, he had trained in Bordeaux, and it is this French region that has remained a strong influence on the Musar wines. During WW2, Bordeaux vigneron Major Ronald Barton was stationed in Lebanon and shared his knowledge and experience with Gaston. As a result, Gaston experimented with/planted the claret grape Cabernet Sauvignon. Later, his eldest son Serge (a civil engineer by training) studied winemaking at the University of Bordeaux, staying at Chateau Langoa-Barton.

During Lebanon’s Civil War (1975-1990), Serge – a determined humanitarian – worked hard to find new markets and, gradually, Chateau Musar’s quality and personality began to find international favour/appeal. In 1979, Michael Broadbent championed the winery after tasting 1967 Musar Red at the Bristol Wine Fair; five years later, ‘Decanter’ Magazine named Serge their first ‘Man of the Year’ for continuing to produce superb wines despite wartime difficulties. Indeed, only two vintages were lost when the grapes could not be transported to the winery.

And it’s Serge’s thoughtful methods, honed over the years, that give the wines their unique characteristics: blending single vineyard wines to reflect each vintage’s strengths, fermentation in cement vats, no fining, little filtration, low sulphite use, seven years’ vinification (including 12 months in French oak barrels for the top wines to ensure longevity. Today, Tarek Sakr, apprenticed to Serge since 1991, is in charge. Trained in France with Lafite-Rothschild, he is also increasing the number of vineyards being cultivated organically.

Vineyards are relatively high with a mild average temperature of 25C, and that can vary from snowy winters to fiery summers. The red vines – Carignan, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon – many over 50 years old, lie at 1000m on gravelly soils over limestone while the white vineyards – Obaideh and Merwah, ancestors of Chardonnay and Semillon – lie at 1400m on stony, chalk soils or calcareious gravels. These latter, planted between 50 and 90 years ago, are still on their own roots, and amongst very few vineyards left in the world of this calibre. All vineyards produce relatively low yields.
Once harvested, the grapes are taken to the winery 70km away at the family’s 18th century castle in Ghazir, near the Mediterranean coast north of Beirut. Home to millions of uninsurable bottles, it fully deserves the Arabic name ‘M’zar’: ‘place of remarkable beauty’.
