When New World wines came on the scene, Australia quickly established its position as the leader of the pack, certainly in the eyes of the consumer. Now, however, they are facing increasing competition from the wine producers of Chile and Argentina, and the wine-buying public are beginning to reject the big blowsy Aussie wines that knock you out rather than perk you up.
We suggest, if you want something a little more subtle, to look to the cooler-climate wines of Western Australia and Tasmania. As the temperatures here are not so intense, the grapes do not ripen to the same degree and their alcohol content is lower, yet the nuances of the resulting wines are higher. For something particularly stimulating, we suggest wines from the Harewood Estate in Western Australia - which was started by an Englishman - or the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from Devil's Corner in Tasmania.
